During Carnival Monday morning and in the wee hours of the morning, the first revelers take to the streets, dancing, jumping and of course shouting. More party-goers than not are likely under the influence of the fine local rum. But this is the exhilaration of the occasion and Trinidad Carnival only happens once a year. This early mas, known as jouvert, (a contraction of the French "jour ouvert", or "opening day"), is for the die-hard carnival player. It is a ritual re-enacted to the accompaniment of oil, mud, pitchforks and tails (both pointed). An elemental celebration of the darker side of human life. The costumed street dance, jouvert, officially launches Carnival for most islands at daybreak. On other islands, jouvert precedes Mardi Gras or the main celebration.
